Facts You Should Know Before Getting Porcelain Veneers
BY Cosmetic Dentistry of Hayward

Dental veneers are among the most popular and effective treatments in cosmetic dentistry. They can provide an instant smile makeover, covering up crooked teeth, gaps, stains and more. Just like any cosmetic investment, it is important that you have a thorough understanding of what to expect before you begin. Here are some lesser-known facts about veneers to be aware of:

Veneers are irreversible. This type of cosmetic procedure requires that about 0.5mm be shaved off of the front surface of your tooth to allow the porcelain shell to bond properly. The reduction in natural tooth structure makes this procedure irreversible.

Temporary sensitivity should be expected. Again, since a small portion of your tooth covering was removed, it is not uncommon to experience sensitivity to hot and cold for the first few days. If your discomfort persists, please contact us.

Extra stress to the veneer should be avoided. Good common sense can lead you here, but your veneers shouldn’t be used to open bottles, bite down on a candy apple or other extreme forces. Veneers are very durable, but the porcelain is brittle.

Teeth grinding habits should be disclosed!  It is imperative that you discuss any teeth grinding or teeth clenching habit with your dentist before you get veneers. It will be necessary to get a custom mouthguard to protect your veneers going forward.

Routine oral hygiene should be maintained.  Don’t be afraid to brush and floss like you normally would. Veneers are one of the kindest cosmetic procedures to your gum tissues, so feel free to floss and clean thoroughly in between your teeth. Remember that veneers aren’t replacing your entire teeth. You still have natural teeth underneath that are susceptible to decay!

Teeth whitening may be considered to match bottom teeth to veneers on top. Many patients that choose to have veneers on the upper teeth only may find that their bottom teeth look extra yellow or dingy in comparison. Rest assured that a professional teeth-whitening session can typically blend your smile.
